Nailing It: Can Wood Be Secured to Concrete?

Concrete is a multifaceted material when it comes to constructing and has countless applications, both within interior spaces and out of doors. A recurrent question we get asked is whether one can securely fasten wood to concrete. Pleased to report, the response is ‘absolutely yes.’

For those looking to attach something to concrete, the use of a concrete nail is recommended. Featuring a sharp point and a wide head, these nails are constructed specifically for this purpose. The point enables penetration into the hard material and the wide head keeps it securely in its desired spot.

If you’re having trouble locating concrete nails, you can always fall back on everyday nails. However, it’s important to make sure they’re driven in at an angle for extra grip. Screws can work, too. Make sure that these are aligned diagonally to prevent any unintended movement.

After selecting the fasteners that are appropriate for the job, you can now move onto securing the wood. Make sure that your screws or nails are adequately long enough to penetrate both the wood and concrete. Through taking the extra step to use a drill to create a pilot hole first, you can protect the wood from potential splintering.

Hammering nails into concrete is an uncomplicated activity, assuming the right type of fastener is selected and a pilot hole is drilled beforehand to counter any potential splitting. All that’s left to do then is commence the fixing!
